1st – 3rd Century AD Roman Gold Gilt & Silver Inlaid Wolfs Head Phalera. This is an extraordinary Roman gilt bronze wolfs head with inlaid silver eyes, circa 1st – 3rd century. Most likely a phalera. The wolf is depicted with bared teeth & ears flat back, the silver eyes are reticulated & to the neck is a banded collar. The hair on the back plate is hand incised. On the underside is the remains of an iron fixing with concretion around. The gilding is very prominent to the underside & the upper surface of the plate. Traces of gilding can be seen on the wolfs head under magnification so presumably the whole piece was originally gilded. The patination is correct for a bronze of its age. Ex private collection, now deceased Seaton / Devon. CONDITION as per images. The overall condition is as you would expect from an object of substantial age that has been displayed/handled/used, usually over the lifetimes of several owners. Back Plate Diameter 5.4cm.
