This spectacular clock and garniture set from the the 1870’s-80’s features a two train Japy Freres et Cie Movement bearing the medal of honor mark from the late 1860s and is housed in an elborate architectonic case in the renaissance style featuring fire gilding, silvered bronze and inlays/overlays and niello-like decoration. The dial is marked R Stewart fo the eminent goldsmith and jeweler and retailors who were jewelers to Queen Victoria and operated fine retail establishments in Great Britain and France for over 150 years. The clock case measures 14 3/4″ tall x 8 1/4″ wide x 5″ deep and boasts 4 3/4″ bezel with 3 3/4 silvered and gilt/niello dial. There is a repeated motif of Dolphins and urns with foliate swags in the mixed metal panels and on the side urn garnitures. The garnitures stand 11″ tall x 3″ deep x 3 3/4 wide. Everywhere you look, the finishes on the case and side pieces astonish you with the quality and sophistication of technique. The set was recently discovered in an attic where it had hidden away for at least 50 years and it is grimy with uneven oxidation and some polishing wear to the fire gilding with exposed bronze on the “roof” of the clock. The clock does not run: the time spring slips or is broken while the strike train is good and functions. It has a deep, resonant gong and comes with an old wuinding key and what appears to be original pendulum. The suspension spring is gone and the movement is numbered and marked, “RACK”… Perhaps referring to the strike train mechanism?
